The encounter
between Lewis and the Blackfeet was the only encounter with native peoples
that resulted in the death of two Blackfeet warriors from the Piegan Tribe.
The Blackfeet
live in what is present day Montana.
There are three
tribes of Blackfeet: the Piegan, Siksika (Blackfeet), and Kainah (Blood).
In the Blackfeet
Indian’s Creation Story, Old Man (Napi) created the world.
Blackfeet warriors
called themselves “Lords of the Plains”
The Blackfeet
people were nomadic since they followed the buffalo, their main source
of food.
Tepees made of
wooden poles and animal hides, were what the Blackfeet lived in. They were
able to take down the tepees when they moved and put them up when they stopped
again.
Horses (also known
as Elk Dogs) and buffalo were very important to the Blackfeet people. The
horses helped them hunt the buffalo. Buffalo was their main source of food
and was used for clothing, tepee covers, and a variety of other purposes.
Blackfeet men
hunted deer, antelope, and buffalo with bows and arrows. They used the skin
of the animals to make clothing. The women decorated the clothing with quills
and beads.
Men wore headdresses
whose feathers stood straight up, which was different from the headdresses
of other tribes.
The Blackfeet
got their name from the dark soles of their moccasins. The dark soles occurred
in part to the ash left from prairie fires.
The Blackfeet
used an oral language in addition to sign language.
The Blackfeet
ate lots of meat. Some men could eat up to five pounds of meat in one day!
They also ate different kinds of roots and berries. Sometimes they combined
meat, berries, and fat to make pemmican.
