The dolphin amid the distant stars
is neither here nor there, but ours.
The white tiger among the cumulus
is neither cloud nor tiger, but us.
The wolf that bounds the wolf-king's
mountain on admixed wings
admits no mixed feelings, but is
(to scale) the true ekphrasis.

I know this palace but have never
been, know the black panther
half-sleeping, tail sweeping
the snowy marble. I have seen
the empress of impossible beauty,
addressing her gallery in negligee.
She will have no audience with me,
and guards are everywhere
(just out of view, naturally).
