Edible Book Festival to end National Library Week festivities

Booth Library will celebrate National Library Week April 12-18 by sponsoring several activities.
On April 16, the library will host the fifth annual Edible Book Festival. Items will be on display for public viewing from 4 to 6 p.m. Public voting will take place from 4 to 5:30 p.m., with the winners announced shortly after. An “edible book” is something that looks like a book or is book-themed and is made out of food. The edible artwork will not be eaten; however, refreshments will be served. Prizes will be awarded.
The annual book sale was held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 15 outside the south entrance of Booth Library in the Alumni Quad (weather permitting). Thank you to all of our book sale patrons! The proceeds from the sale are used to enhance library programs and services.
At 4:30 p.m. April 15 the winners of the 2015 Awards for Excellence in Student Research and Creativity were announced during a reception hosted by the Library Advisory Board. The awards program promotes and recognizes excellence in student research and encourages students to utilize the wealth of information available at Booth Library to enhance their studies. Congratulations to this year’s winners: Helen Plevka for her paper, “Discordant Desire: Morley’s Polyphony in Shakespeare’s ‘Twelfth Night'”; Anita Ihuwan for her paper, “Knowledge and Attitudes of College Students Concerning HIV/AIDS”; and Nusrat Farah for her paper, “Impact of Household and Demographic Characteristics on Poverty in Bangladesh: A Logistic Regression Analysis.”

299 Sage Journals added to the EIU library catalog

Since 2007 EIU has had electronic access to the Sage Deep Backfile collection of 299 journals. These journals range in subject matter across all areas of knowledge and provide full coverage of articles from a journal’s first issue until 1998. Until now these journals were available through the Booth Library journals A-Z list and the “find it @EIU” button:

Now these valuable materials are also available for the first time through the library’s catalog. You can browse the entire list by performing a search in the library catalog for the keywords Sage deep backfile.
Edible Book Festival accepting entries

Booth Library will sponsor its fifth annual Edible Book Festival on April 16 as part of National Library Week.
Anyone in the community may enter a work made out of edible materials that has something to do with books in either its shape or content. The artwork will not be eaten. To view entries from last year’s competition, click here.
Entries may be installed at the library after 3 p.m. April 16. Items will be on display for public viewing from 4 to 6 p.m. Public voting will take place from 4 to 5:30 p.m., with the winners announced shortly after.
Awards will be presented in the following categories: Dean’s Choice, People’s Choice, Children’s Book Theme, Student Entry, Family Entry and Funniest Pun.
There is no fee to participate in or view this show; however, those planning to enter the contest must pre-register. The entry form is available in printable form on the library website. Or, participants should send the following information: name; library/school/department (if applicable); phone number and email address; title of entry; and estimated size of the final piece (display materials will be provided based on this information).
All entries will automatically be entered into the Dean’s Choice and People’s Choice award categories. Please state if the entry also qualifies for the Children’s Book Theme, Student Entry, Family Entry or Funniest Pun categories.
Entry forms for the Edible Book Festival are due by April 13 and can be submitted online here. Entries also may be brought to Booth Library; emailed to library@eiu.edu; or mailed to the library at 600 Lincoln Ave., Charleston, IL 61920, Attn: Edible Books. What can you find in Congressional Committee Hearings: Senate, House, Joint or Special?

A plethora of timely hearings and studies are available in Booth’s Government Documents Federal Depository (GovDocs) stacks –from “Fraud on the Elderly,” “Offshore Tax Evasion,” and “Children Migrating from Central America,” to “Rebuilding American Manufacturing,” “U.S. Policy Toward Sudan and South Sudan,” and “The Charleston, West Virginia Chemical Spill.”
Over 30 recent documents are listed below, investigating drug shortages, forced labor, wasteful spending, pension savings, cyber-crime, the Affordable Care Act and more; Most hearings can be read online as e-documents but some are only available in paper and are located in our GovDocs room on the second floor, north. Congressional Hearings: A meeting or session of the Senate, House of Representatives, Joint or Special Committees of Congress organized to obtain information, testimony, and opinions on proposed legislation, conduct an investigation, or evaluate/oversee the activities of a government department or the implementation of a Federal law–they are usually open to the public.
Hearings may also be purely exploratory in nature, providing testimony and data about topics of current interest. Witnesses often include government officials, spokespersons for interested groups, experts, officials of the General Accounting Office and members of Congress. Subpoenas may be issued to summon reluctant witnesses. Most congressional hearings are published two months to two years after they are held.
Other types of hearings:
Field Hearing: a committee or subcommittee hearing which is held outside Washington D.C.–often in the state of a committee member.
Markup: a meeting or series of meetings by a committee or subcommittee in which members perform a section-by-section analysis or “mark up” on a bill or measure by offering, debating, and voting on amendments to it.
Oversight Hearing (or Legislative Review): a congressional review of the way in which federal agencies implement laws to ensure they are carrying out the intent of Congress; to inquire into the efficiency of implementation; and to evaluate the effectiveness of the law. Oversight hearings also determine whether laws should be changed or if additional laws are necessary.
