Pro vs. Con: Opposing Viewpoints and Contemporary World Issues

Posted on September 26th, 2015

ProCon

There are always (at least) two sides to every story.  A current book display in the reference lab features books that present opposing viewpoints on several contemporary world issues.  Looking for more?  Visit the Pro/Con Subject Guide where you can find more information about researching both sides of an issue. Booth has several book series that provide arguments for and against many controversial topics.

Posted on September 20th, 2015

A new post in Refnews by Librarian Sarah Johnson explores the Civil War through Historical Fiction.

Exploring the Civil War through historical fiction

Posted on September 20th, 2015

  • Interested in learning what it was like to live during the Civil War years?  Reading historical novels set at this time will let you experience the political turmoil, wartime atmosphere, and cultural changes that transformed America in the 1860s.  Topics include slavery and emancipation, Civil War battles, daily life, and fictional portraits of President Lincoln and Mary Todd Lincoln.

The following novels can be found on a display table in the Marvin Foyer of Booth Library (just inside the north entrance).  All are available for checkout.  This book display, curated by reference librarian Sarah Johnson, serves as a supplementary exhibit for the Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War exhibit and program series held at Booth Library between September 4-October 16, 2015.

To find additional novels on the topic, try a search in the EIU Library Catalog.  This list provides just a selection; we have many other Civil War novels available as ebooks!
