Anabela Maia, Ph.D., Assistant Professor My main research interest focuses on functional and ecological morphology. I have chosen to work with locomotion, concentrating on the aquatic realm. I use functional morphology to elucidate the evolution of locomotion mechanics. I am particularly interested in the role of fins and other control surfaces during unsteady locomotion. I employ techniques that enable three dimensional conformation analyses of fins and fluid dynamics. In addition, I am also interested in the physiology and function of the musculoskeletal system and in material properties of fish appendages. |

I am a graduate student in Biological Sciences at EIU. My research interests focuses on fisheries biology and environmental stressors like temperature. Currently I am looking at muscle mechanics and energetics of largemouth bass and bluegill sunfish at different temperatures. Temperature patterns are altered throughout the world as an direct impact of climate change and as poikilothermic aquatic animal fish are facing different types stress. I am also interested in studying the hormonal changes that occur in fish in response to temperature. I am having a true hands-on experience with fish physiology in Biomechanics Lab! |

I am an undergraduate student in the Department of Biological Sciences at EIU and currently working in Dr. Maia's Fish Biomechanics Lab. I am interested in the morphological and ecological functionality of fish fins in relation to a turbulent environment. My studies are focused on marine fishes in reef environments. Currently, I am studying the characteristics and swim patterns of the four-striped damselfish under turbulent conditions.
