Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie

The plants on the list were considered threats to habitat restoration, based on the experience of Midewin staff, our colleagues, or in the professional literature. These plants are considered non-native, invasive species. The list consists of plants now present on Midewin that were not originally native to Midewin or the surrounding area. These plants are considered invasive because they invade native vegetation or habitat restoration projects and eventually exclude native flora, usually through some form of competition. All these plants species require active management to exclude or control. Some plants native elsewhere-in North America (Osage-orange) or even Illinois (black locust, rough-leaved dogwood) are on the list because of the problem they cause in Midewin.
