Frankly it's my opinion that Oracle wasn't designed to work on Windows and works much better on the unix platforms. That's just me though. For this class I opted to install on my home machine, a Vista box. It's a learning experience for me what with all the crazy windows permissions and using services to control Oracle. It does install and you get create and login to your DB and run scripts through sqlplus though. Just ignore the networking error that pops up during install. Here's how I would typically use sqlplus and notepad to quickly diagnose and fix your .sql scripts: 1) To get a cmd prompt : hold down the windows key +r 2) Type 'cmd' in the box, this will bring up a DOS prompt 3) In the DOS prompt type: 'sqlplus /nolog' 4) Once connected (not to the DB, just to sqlplus), connect to your database using 'connect / as sysdba;' From there, you can run your scripts which generally call for connecting to 'system' via the single line 'connect system;' which will prompt you for your password and away you go. It is also useful to compose your scripts in notepad, have them in your c:\USERS\yourname directory. This way you don't have to mess around with changing directories to run them after you fire up your sqlplus session. A final tip is to ensure you save your scripts as 'all files' and append the .sql to the end of them. This is very important to do each and every time, otherwise windows will attempt to append a .txt to them. OK, enjoy! I'm off to laugh at all my Michigan pals because they got beat by a tiny school this weekend.
