Society and Technology:
Preliminary Thoughts on the Reciprocal Relationship

In this paper, I provide a brief overview of the evolving relationship between society and technology. Using three examples --- the cell phone, the personal computer, and the attempt to locate a low-level radioactive waste facility (LLRW) in east central Illinois --- I explore some of the unforeseen consequences of emerging technology. I conclude by noting some of Richard Sclove's suggestions regarding developing technology in a democracy.
