Dr. Les Hyder

L. R. Hyder is professor of Journalism at Eastern Illinois University and has chaired the Journalism Department since 1993. His professional journalism experience has been in broadcast news stations, newspapers, a financial journal, and as a public information officer. Before becoming a full-time tenure-track faculty member at EIU, and while working as a professional journalist, he was an adjunct professor or visiting professional at major universities. He has taught a wide range of journalism classes from news writing to journalism ethics. In recent years he has concentrated on media in society and freedom of expression. He has been active in various professional and academic organizations, holding major leadership positions in many of them. He has received numerous awards from these organizations and from the institutions where he has taught. He earned a doctorate at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. He also has earned two master's degrees and a bachelor's degree.
