About Project WOW
Project WOW is a
collaborative school-university project between Eastern Illinois University Department of Early
Childhood, Elementary, and Middle Level Education and Carl Sandburg
Elementary School. ELE3340/001, Social Studies Methods for the
Elementary and Middle Level School, has been redesigned as a
school-based methods course with a commitment to technology
integration. Pre-service teachers enrolled in ELE3340/001 (Judy
Barford,
instructor)
along with children of the third grade classes of Lou Conwell and Kathy Miller,
coordinate their efforts throughout the semester to research
value-based curriculum with technology support.
Seventy+ participants made up the Lincoln teams
for spring
semesters 2007, 2008, and 2009, in celebration of the 2009 Lincoln
Bicentennial. In alternate semesters, Project WOW develops
various Heroes curricula: Wonders
of Wisdom. Our theme for fall, 2008 focused on the
struggle for freedom in the 1800's, especially the abolitionists,
through Wonders of Wisdom: Heroes of Freedom.
For
the Bicentennial of the great
journey west, 2002 - 2006, Project WOW teams studied the Lewis and
Clark Expedition: Wonders of the Wilderness.
For Fall, 2009, each of twelve teams is studying one of America's
national parks or historic sites. Along with Lewis and Clark, the
national parks are a Wonders of the Wilderness
theme.
