Jane was born in 1860 in Cedarville, Illinois.  She was born at the beginning of the Civil War.  Jane's father, John, was good friends with Abraham Lincoln.  When John Addams found out that Abraham Lincoln had been killed he began to cry. Jane said that was the first time she had seen a grown-up cry.  Jane's mother died when she was only two years old. 

Jane visited Freeport, Illinois with her father when she was young.  Jane saw that the people in Freeport did not have very much money and had bad houses.  Jane had been privileged to have a very nice house and plenty of money to buy the things she needed.  Jane said that when she grew up she wanted to help the poor people.
