1862
Ida B. Wells was born a slave in Holly Springs, Mississippi.
1865 The Civil War ends, the 13th Amendment was granted to abolish
slavery.
1868 The 14th Amendment was passed, which required equal protection
under the law in all persons.
1878 Ida's parents die and she must keep the family together.
1870 The 15th Amendment was passed, which banned racial discrimination
in voting.
1883 Ida B. Wells moved to Memphis to teach and write.
1896 The Supreme Court approves "the seperate but equal segregation."
1909-1910 The NAACP is founded (National Association for the
Advancement of Colored People). Ida B. Wells is one of the founding
memember.
1931 Ida B. Wells dies in Chicago, Illinois.
1954 Supreme Court declares school segregation UNCONSTITUTIONAL in it's
Brown vs. Board of Education.
1955 Rosa Parks is jailed for refusing to move to the back of a
city bus. A boycott follows
1963 Dr. Martin Luther King gives his "I have a dream" speech.
1964 Congress passes the Civil Right's Act.
