WHAT IS A NATIONAL PARK?!

 

OBJECTIVE/GOAL: Student’s will know why Yosemite is a National Park, why Fox Ridge is a State Park, and what makes Lincoln Log Cabin a Historical Site.

 

CONTENT KNOWLEDGE:

        NATIONAL PARK

·        An area of land set aside to protect unique, natural areas.

·        Created so that all people have a place to go no matter how much money you have

·        National parks are public land with unusual beauty and unique wildlife

·        An area, or place, that has something special that no other park has

·        National parks preserve our natural heritage

·        In order to achieve national park status, Congress must pass a law that sets aside land

·        These parks are open 24/7, 365 days a year

·        Federal Government that provides money to pay for the upkeep of the park and pays for the employees who take care of it

·        Must report to the President

·        Not allowed to hunt

 

STATE PARK

·        Funded by state government

·        Land owned by the state

·        Report to the Governor

·        Land that people feel is unique and a place they feel needs to be preserved

·        Illinois has 40 state parks, closest to Charleston, IL, is Fox Ridge

·        You can hunt in a state park (depending on the park)

·        Focus on land and geology

 

STATE HISTORICAL SITE

·        Over 60 in Illinois- closest to Charleston, IL, is Lincoln Log Cabin

·        Places that are important to our history

·        Have museums, collections, or historical buildings

·        Focus on history and people
