September 7, 1804

On September 7, the captains found themselves in the middle of a village of small animals that lived in tunnels in the ground.  This unknown animal was "Petite Chien".  Lewis and Clark gave this animal its first formal name, the prairie dog.  They dug six feet into the ground and then they poured water to force the animal out so they could see it.
