Our Mini Field Trip

For our mini field trip, we had the opportunity to listen to Mr. Tom Vance.  Mr. Vance is an expert on Illinois culture and music during the lifetime of Abraham Lincoln.  He has participated in re-enactments at the Lincoln Log Cabin for 20 years.  During his visit with us, Mr. Vance shared several songs on his banjo that were played and sang for entertainment during the 19th century.

Mr. Vance performed the songs:
"Jimmy Cracked Corn" (this was one of Abe's favorite songs)
"Camp Town Races"
"Charleston (Buffalo) Gals"
"Go Tell Aunt Rhody"
"Way Down Yonder in the Pawpaw Patch"

Questions for Mr. Vance from our team:
1.  Where do you get your information about Lincoln from?
      * Mr. Vance said that his information comes from books he reads and visiting other         historical sites.
2.  What was Abe like when he was a boy?
*Mr. Vance said that when he was a boy he went to school for only a few years                 because he needed to be at home working.  Unfortunately that is why Abe Lincoln             didn't receive much education.
3.  What is your favorite thing about Abe?
*Mr. Vance said that he like the fact that Abe could tell good stories so that                     everyone could understand.
