if i could save time in a bottle

identify the arithmetic process ( add / subtract / multiply / divide ) and the product ( answer ) to these "passing the squeeze" items.

note that this assignment came AFTER your experience with "passing the squeeze" -- so it is legal -- moral -- and educationally 'sound.'

1. there are 20 students in the class. Their average arm span is 1 meter.

What is the circumference of the circle they form when holding hands ?

___________ meters

2. you run a test of your "bottle timer" and find that in 40 clock seconds the pendulum makes 50 tick-tocks.

First:

is the bottle timer tick-tock more or less than a real second ?

_____ more / less

Second:

What is the real second value of the tick tock ? _____________________

3. you bottle pendulum makes an average of 5 tick-tocks for the entire class to "pass the squeeze"

First:

is it more or less than 5 real seconds ? ______more / less

Second:

How many real seconds in this ? _____________________

4. what is the speed of the "squeeze" in meters / real second

____________meters / real sec ... and

people / real second ? (remember - there are 20 people in the class circle )

____________people / real sec

5. the circumference of earth is 40,000 kilometers.

How many meters is this ? 1 km = 1,000 m ______________ meters

How many people would you need to "wrap around earth " if they stood a meter apart ?

______________ people

6. at the speed of 5 people / real second -- how many seconds would it take to pass the squeeze around earth ?

_____________________

7. someone says you can determine the number of days in the question above by dividing the answer to question #6 by 86,400.

Why would this work? ______________________________________

"the answers"

1) 20 meters ( 20 people x 1 meter each )
2) first: it is less than a real second because there are 50 of "them" for every 40 real seconds
second: 0.8 of a second or 40 / 50 second or 4 / 5 second
3) first: it's less than 5 real seconds
second: it is 4 real second ( 4 / 5ths of the bottle tick-tocks )
4) 5 meters per real sec ( 20 meters / 4 real sec ) & 5 people per real sec ( 20 people / 4 real sec )
5) 40,000,000 ( 40 million meters ) & if we stand people a meter apart: 40 million people are needed
6) 5 people per second divided into 40,000,000 people =

8 millions seconds = (divide by 60 second / min )

13,333 minutes = (divide by 60 min / hour )

222.22 hours = ( divide by 24 hr / day )

9.3 days

7) there are 86,400 seconds in a day -- (24 hours x 60 min/hr x 60 sec/min) -- so this would be a "short cut" to deriving the answer
because you experienced the hand-squeeze phenomena --- and because you have completed this "homework sheet" derived from that activity --- and because this sheet has the "answers" and a guide to the processes that produced them --- then it is legal; moral and educationally 'sound' to think similar questions might appear some day on a quiz.
REMEMBER: if you just do the Exploration Phase of The Learning Cycle -- you are an entertainer.

When you combine it with Concept Introduction / Application -- and homework to master the concept --- then you become an educator.
