*He was born in Galesburg, Illinois on January 6, 1878

*In 1896 Carl took his first trip to Chicago
*In 1897 Carl leaves Illinois for the first tiem and heads west as a vagabond      looking for an adventure as well as work
*In 1898 Carl serves as a private in Puerto Rico during the Spanish American War.
*In 1898 after returning from the war Carl enrolls as a special student at Lomard College in Galesburg, Illinois.
*In 1905 Carl becomes assistant editor of To-Morrow magazine in Chicago, which publishes some of his poems and pieces.
*In 1906 Carl leaves Galesburg to work in Chicago
*In 1907 he becomes the organizer for the Social-Democratic Party of Wisconsin.
*While a part of the Social-Democratic Party he meets Lilian Steichen, a school teacher and fellow Socialist.
*In 1908 Marries Lilian Steichen in Milwaukee, Wisconsin
*1916, His book "Chicago Poems" is published
*In 1922 Rootabaga Stories, a childrens series, is published
*In 1939 Four-volume Abraham Lincoln: The War Years is published
*1940 wins the Pulitzer Prize for history for his book Abraham Lincoln: The War Years
*In 1945 Carl and his family move to Connemara a farm, in Flat Rock, North Carolina.
*In 1946 Carl's birthplace in Galesburg, Illinois was dedicated as a historical site.
*In 1950 his book "Complete Poems" is published
*1951, wins his second Pulitzer Prize for "Complete Poems"
*In 1953 Carl attends Carl Sandburg Day banquet in Chicago on his 75th birthday, there he recieved the Poetry Society of America gold medal.
*In 1965 Carl was honored by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People
*In 1967 Carl dies in Flat Rock, on his farm at the age of 89.
