Week By Week Overview!

Week 1: 19th Century Overview
We read "Pink and Say" by Patricia Polacco to learn about how life was during the Civil War.

A.   Students will have a better understanding of race relations in the 19th century.

 B.   Students will be able to compare and contrast the daily lifestyles of today and life during the 19th century.

 C.   Students will increase their vocabulary skills by creating a Team Dictionary including terms: porridge, deserter, spectacles, war whoop, outfit, marauder, ransacked, and buckboard.

Week 2: Birth to the Battlefield

This is the first free public school that Clara Barton opened, in New Jersey.

 A.   Students will have a better understanding of the events that took place during Clara Barton’s life from 1821-1864.

 B.   Students will be able to sequence the major events on a time line.

 C.   Students will increase their vocabulary skills by adding to their Team Dictionary terms including: suffrage, midwife, rafter, and phrenologist.

 D.   Students will follow along with the lesson completing a timeline listing major events discussed.

Week 3: Amputation, the Civil War Band-aid.  Medicine on the Battlefield

This is an ambulance that was used during the Civil War.

 A.   Students will review material by selecting questions from a bag and reading comprehension questions aloud to the group.

 B.   Using PowerPoint the students will have a better understanding of what medicine in the 19th century looked like.

 C.   Students will be able to compare and contrast medical differences between now and the 19th century.

 D.   Students will be able to practice Civil War medicine by practicing war wrappings.  They will learn how to create a sling and head wrap for triangle bandages.

Week 4: Battlefield and Beyond

One of Clara Barton's most famous legacies is the American Red Cross which she founded in 1881. Today, it is the Red Cross that brings immediate medical help to people suffering  from diasasters in America and around the world.

 A.   Students will review previously learned materials by participating in a game of Around the World where they will answer several trivia questions about Clara Barton’s life 1821-1865.

 B.   Using PowerPoint and visual aids, students will have a better understanding of the events that took place in the history of the Red Cross 1865-1975.

 C.   Students will be aware of the impact that Clara Baron still has on America and the World.

 D.   Students will be able to sequence the major events covered using individual and wall-sized timelines.

 E.    Students will review the lifestyle of the 19th century and the major events in Clara Barton’s life and the work of the Red Cross by participating in Jeopardy review game.

Week 5: The American Red Cross
Students learned about the Red Cross and how it helps people on and off the battlefield.

A.     Students will have a better understanding and mental image of The American Red Cross through a virtual tour using PowerPoint and visual aids.

B.     Students will understand why Clara Barton is a hero by examining her dedication to the organizations in time, lifestyle, and home.

C.     Students will be aware of the different events that the Red Cross responds to (natural disasters and bringing supplies to soldiers).

D.     Students will understand how Clara Barton made and still makes a difference in the lives of many with the America Red Cross, International Red Cross, the Clara Barton Site for Diabetes Education.

E.      Students will research online different organizations within their community where voluteers reach out and help those in need.

F.      Students will write and illustrate how they can and/or do make a difference in their community (i.e. recycling).

Week 6: First Aid

Students learned basic first aid and practiced on their teammates!

 A.   Students will review previous material by playing “The Winner May Lose” which is a review game of chance.

 B.   The students will have a better understanding of safe first aid practices.

 C.   Students will practice making 911 calls to be prepared if they ever have to make a real 911 call.

 D.   Students will learn the different parts of a first aid kit, and then create their own kits.

 E.    Students will learn the different parts of a standard first aid kit, and then create their own.

 F.    Students will learn the importance of being safe while performing first aid.  They will learn to keep themselves safe-- use gloves and wash hands.
