Mini Field Trip
Learning about the Quaker Religion
Our team had the opportunity to speak
to a gentleman, Dr. Steve Daniels, that grew up in the Quaker
religion. This was very
important to our team because Thomas Garrett was a Quaker and his
religious views had a great impact on his decision to help
slaves. Thomas Garrett believed, because of his religion, that
all people were seen as equal in the eyes of God. Because Thomas
Garrett believed this, he did not see the color of skin of the slaves
that he was helping, but instead saw that they were a part of God's
people and needed to be respected. Thomas Garrett helped over
2,700 slaves escape in 40 years, and his religion had a major influece
on his actions. Thank you, Dr. Daniels for talking with us.
