Climbing with Dr. Pommier
mini field trip

The Rock Climbing mini field trip was led by Dr. John Pommier, rock climber and EIU professor with a vast array of  knowledge.
He explained the importance of having control over your footing at all times. Additionally, always scan the area with your eyes to find the safest place to place your hands and feet.
The most easily made mistake that can cost a climber their life is not keeping a clean rope.
There are two types of ropes, dynamic and static, Dynamic rope is used for climbing and  is very stretchy. Dirt can find its way into these ropes and cut the elastic bands from the inside. Once cut, the rope will snap in pieces!
Equipment Needed for Rock Climbing:
  • Clean DYNAMIC rope that is properly maintained to ensure reliability.
  • Body harness to secure yourself to the rope and the mountain.
  • Water filter to clean water that may contain harmful germs.
  • HELMET
  • Wear layers of clothing-
    • an outer layer- a coat, climbing boots, and gloves
    • an inner lining- sweater, warm socks, and keep dry
  • Portable stove that can be packed away.
