Ways the Buffalo Were Hunted:
Many Indian tribes were nomadic herders.  This means that they would spend the year following the migrations of the buffalo herds.

The first way the buffalo were hunted was by a method called "Buffalo Jumps".  This method was used when the Indians hunted on foot.  They would herd the buffalo towards a cliff, where the animals would then fall over the edge and be killed.

The second way the buffalo were hunted was called a "Surround".  This method was used when the Indians rode horses toward a herd of buffalo to surround them.  Then they would kill them with them with their arrows and lances.

Uses of the Buffalo:
The Indians had much respect for the buffalo and showed this through their "Buffalo Dance."  They used every part of the buffalo except the heart.  This they believed held a seed for a new buffalo and would leave it for a new buffalo to grow.
Skin/Hide of the buffalo was used for clothing, teepees, bags, and jewelry.
The bones were used to make weapons and utensils.
The skull was used as a mask or hung outside the door to their dwellings to keep away the bad spirits.
The organs were used for food.
The blood was used for soup.
The fur was used for blankets and clothing.
