Thomas Jefferson
Thomas Jefferson was born in Shadwell, Virginia in 1743.
Before his presidency, Jefferson studied law and served in the military.
Jefferson became President of the United States in 1801. During his
presidency, Jefferson accomplished many things. Jefferson wanted
answers about the west. He wanted to know what the land was like.
Jefferson had an idea for an expedition. When planning for the expedition
was underway in 1802, Jefferson chose the leaders for his expedition.
Jefferson chose his secretary, Meriwether Lewis, to lead the expedition.
Jefferson looked to Lewis to choose a partner to help him lead the expedition.
In 1803, Lewis wrote to an old friend and former army commander, William
Clark. Clark agreed to accompany Lewis on the expedition. The
leaders of Jefferson's expedition had been chosen. Thomas Jefferson
played a significant role in this expedition.
