Sioux Indians
    The Sioux Indians were one of the Indian tribes that Lewis and Clark encountered on their journey.

Where did the Sioux live?
They lived in the Great Plains in the following states, North Dakota, South Dakota, Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming, Montana, Oklahoma, Texas, and Colorado.

What did the Sioux Indians look like?
The Sioux Indians skin color was a light brown to deep brown.  Most Sioux were tall and thin.  Boys and girls, men and women wore their hair long and in braids.

What type of houses did the Sioux live in?
The Sioux people lived in a great round tent called a "tipi."  The tipi was made of wooden poles covered with decorated buffalo hide.  The tipi had only one room.  The floor was bare earth. The family fire was in the middle. This home could be packed up and moved easily.

What did the Sioux eat?
The Sioux ate buffalo, bear, deer, antelope, turkey and hens.  The Sioux shared their food with the whole tribe.

What kind of clothes did the Sioux wear?
The Sioux wore a strip of leather in their hair to keep it pulled back.  Their clothes were made from animal skins, mostly deerskins.  Women and girls wore long dresses and leggings.  Men wore deerskin shirts and tight leggings.  Often the clothes were decorated with colorful bead and quill embroidery.   Feathers, shells, animal claws and teeth, and paint were also included in the design and decoration of the Sioux clothes.
