Civil War Lesson Plans
Lesson
One: The students were informed about the Southern
and Northern parts of the United States. The students
discussed the
difference between the life style in the South and the lifestyle in the
North.
The students were also informed about the start of the Civil War. The
students
were given a Union flag, Confederate flag and also a map of the United States
during the Civil War period.
Lesson
Two: The students were informed about slavery in the United States
during the Civil War and how that affected the causes of it. They learned why the southern states had
slaves and why the northern states didn’t need the slaves.
It was because the southerners counted on their
crops in order to make a living and since the soil in the north wasn’t
as good
as the south, they had factories to keep their productivity great. The students were given a world map to show
where the slaves came from and how far it was.
They were told of the conditions of the slave ships and what it
was like
(to the best of our ability) to be a slave.
Once the lesson was over with, the students were to write a
diary of the
typical day of a slave or what it was like to travel over to America
on a
slave ship.
Lesson
Three: The
students will learn what an abolitionist is and why that had an affect
on
slavery. They will have a better
understanding of how slavery ended and what Lincoln felt about the abolitionists.
Lesson
Four: The
students will learn about where and how the Civil War started. A map of
the United States
will be shown to exemplify the different sides as well as the
boundaries. Also,
important information that will be taken from this lesson will be the
affect that
the Civil War had on the United States. The students
will begin to
understand what war does to a country physically as well as
emotionally.
Lesson
Five: The students will be informed of the
differences between the Civil War and other wars that United States
were
in. They will also be informed of how
the Civil War affected the land of the United
States and how it affected Illinois.
Lesson
Six: The
students will discuss if there are any Civil Wars going on in the world
today
and if so, why. The students will take
what they learned thus far about the American Civil War and compare it
to other civil wars that are taken place recently. This lesson will
wrap up
all of our lessons and a study session will take place for the Group
quiz. The
students will be able to ask any questions about any lesson that was
taught during
this time.
