Lessons
Lesson One: "What was Abraham
Lincoln's life like growing up?"
The students learned about Abraham Lincoln's childhood in
Kentucky, Indiana, and Illinois. A fill-in-the-blank worksheet was
completed while reading a
book about Lincoln's childhood.
Lesson Two: "Why was Lincoln important in the Civil War and slavery?"
The students performed skits from the play "Abraham Lincoln:
Holding the Nation Together" by Meish Goldish. The students learned
about peoples' perception of The Civil War.
Lesson Three: "What were President Lincoln's efforts to keep
the United States together?"
The students learned about the "slave states" and "free states"
and where they were located in the United States. They understood the
efforts that Mr. Lincoln contributed to keep the Union together.
Lesson Four: "The start and end of the Civil War, and how were African
Americans treated after the end of slavery?"
The students learned about different battles in the Civil War,
while constructng a timeline. They also learned about how African
Americans were treated after slavery had ended.
Lesson Five: "Separate but equal: the efforts of Martin Luther King Jr.
and Rosa Parks."
The students learned about the leadership efforts of Martin
Luther King Jr. and the bravery of Rosa Parks during the Civil Rights
Movement. They also wrote a letter to Martin Luther King Jr. thanking
him for his efforts during this time.
Lesson Six: "Important African Americans in history, and the comparison
between Abraham Lincoln and Barack Obama."
The students learned about important African Americans such as:
Louis Armstrong, George Washington Carver, and Frederick Douglass. The
student completed a Venn Diagram comparing President Lincoln with
President Obama.
