* Lesson 1: What was Abraham
Lincoln’s life like before he became president?

Goals: Students will expand
their knowledge of Lincoln’s early life. Students should be able to
appreciate
where Lincoln came from and the challenges he faced before becoming
president.
Summary:

fill in a KWL chart about Abraham Lincoln’s life.

will read and
answer questions in Abraham Lincoln workbook provided by teachers.
·
Students
will examine
maps and identify the different states Abraham Lincoln lived in during
his
childhood.

Students
will be
introduced to new vocabulary related to Lincoln’s early life.
* Lesson 2: Abraham Lincoln’s
Presidency: What important events happened during Lincoln’s presidency?
Date: February 19, 2009

Goals: Students will gain new
knowledge and expand on previous knowledge on the presidency of Abraham
Lincoln
and the Civil Way that went on during that time. Students will explore
different people’s reactions to Lincoln as president, and the decisions
he made
regarding the Civil War.
Summary:

Students
will
view and discuss a PowerPoint put together by the teachers of Lincoln's
home and tomb in Springfield, IL.
·
Students
will
fill in what they have learned during this lesson on a KWL chart.
·
Students
will
listen to a book (“The Boy Who Looked Like Lincoln”).
·
Students
will
discuss main events that occurred during Lincoln’s presidency,
including the
Civil War and the fight to abolish slavery.
* Lesson 3: How do we
memorialize Lincoln today?

basic understanding of how Abraham Lincoln is memorialized today and

their knowledge of the memorials that exist.
Summary:

play a matching game reviewing vocabulary words from past lessons.

brainstorm a list of memorials we have for Lincoln today.
·
Students
will
help organize a poster showing a number of memorials of Lincoln talked
about
throughout the lesson.

Students
will
come up with their own ideas for personal memorials to Lincoln.
* Lesson 4: How well do we know
Barack Obama?

to discern between the facts of life of President Lincoln and President
Obama.
Students will imagine what it is like as the president of the United
States.
Summary:

matching the correct facts with the correct President (Obama or

would do if they were president on a special sheet of paper that will
go into a
book.

will discuss President Obama’s
life as a child and now as the president.
