* Jefferson takes office.

1804

* May 14
Expedition leaves from Camp Dubois.

* Hold a council with the Yankton Sioux Indians.
Trade peace medal and other items.

* September
Begin moving into the Great Plains.
Begin seeing new plants and animals.

* October
Reach Mandan village, build Fort Mandan
across the river from the village.

* November 4
Lewis and Clark hire Sacagawea as an interpreter.

* December
Fort Mandan is complete and the expedition moves in for the winter.

1805

* February 11
Sacagawea gives birth to a boy, Little Pomp.

* February
Lewis and Clark leave Fort Mandan.
Lewis and Clark have encounters with grizzly bears for the first time.

* August
They discover the village of the Shoshones and they try to
negotiate for the horses.
Sacagawea is reunited with her brother.

*August 31
The expedition leaves the Shoshones to go westward.

* September
They meet the Nez Perce Indians.

* December
They settle at Fort Clatsop for the winter and meet the
Clatsop Indians.





1806

* March 23
Fort Clatsop is given to the Clatsop Indians and the expedition heads home.

* May - June
The expedition arrives back at the Nez Perce village and
are given food by the indians.

* July
They see the Blackfeet Indians and stay with them.
The Blackfeet try to steal their horses and a fight breaks out.

* August 14
They expedition arrives back at the Mandan village, they say
good-bye to Little Pomp and Sacagawea.

* September 20
They see a cow and know they are almost home.

* September 23
The expedition arrives back in St. Louis, almost two and a half years later after leaving.
