Client Setup after Installing Oracle 8i/9i EE

1. Start Net8/NetManger: Windows Start—Oracle-OraHome81—Network Administration-Net8 Assistant. In Oracle8i, it is called Net8 whereas in Oracle9i, it is called Net Manger. Everything else is very much the same.

2. Click Local:

4. Click: Edit—Create. Follow the instructions on screen and use the following parameters:

5. If you have difficulty setting up your client, you may want to check tnsnames.ora file in e:\oracle\ora81\NETWORK\ADMIN\tnsnames.ora. The file should contain the following settings.

# TNSNAMES.ORA Network Configuration File: e:\oracle\ora81\NETWORK\ADMIN\tnsnames.ora
# Generated by Oracle configuration tools.
# This file can be copied to local machine if student has difficulty configuring local client.

• The above file was proven correct in Windows 98 environment as well. Thus, those settings are useful for setting up client in Windows 98.
• # is used to provide comments for the file. In other words, text after # can be anything.
• The address list and and other settings correspond to the setting you selected in Net8 Assistant.
• You may want to copy and paste some of the content here into your tnsnames.ora file as a way to facilitate your client set up as a last resolve.
