Science and Technology:
A promise or a Threat?

Dr. Alan Baharlou

Dr. Alan Baharlou is the Chair of the Department of Geology/Geography at EIU. He received his Ph.D. in Geochemistry, 1974, University of Tulsa, Tulsa, Oklahoma, M.S. in Geophysics, 1964, University of Oklahoma, Norman, Oklahoma, and B.S. in Geology, 1960, University of Tehran, Tehran, Iran. Dr. Baharlou's academic/ administrative experience include Chair, Department of Geology, Phillips University, Enid Oklahoma, 1967 - 1977, Director (Dean), Center for the Study of Systems (Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Physics, Mathematics, Speech Pathology), Phillips University, Enid, Oklahoma, 1977-1980, Chair, Department of Geography/Geology, Eastern Illinois University, (EIU), 1980-1983, Professor, Department of Geography/Geology, EIU, 1983-1988, Chair, Department of Geology/Geography, ElU, 1988-present (reinstated B.S. in Geography in 1996), Director, Phillips University Geology Field Camp at St. Juan Mountain from 1967-1980, Geologist: Archaeological Excavation, Tel El Hassi, Israel, Summer 1970, Director, Phillips University Campus in Maljo, Sweden, Academic year 1974. Directed field investigation in Europe, Scandinavia, & USSR.

Besides teaching Introductory Physical Geology & Geography, he also developed and taught four other courses: Geochemistry, Well Log Interpretation, Science & Technology--A Promise or A Threat?, and Senior Seminar - Spaceship Earth- Present State. His publications include "To Drill or Not To Drill: A Synthesis of Experts' Judgements," (Nezhad, G. Hameed, & Baharlou, Alan, 1991, International Journal of Systems Science. vol. 222, no. 9, 1613-1624), "Basic Geology of Petroleum," (Baharlou, Alan, 1984, United Graphics, 212 pages), and "Basic Well Log Interpretation," (Baharlou, Alan, 1986, United Graphics, 170 pages.)

Since 1992, Dr. Baharou represented the College of Sciences in the Academic Technology Advisory Committee (ATAC). Other area of service include Chair, ATAC Student Technology Fee Sub-committee - 1999, The University Honors Council since 1990 representing science disciplines, Undergraduate Research Council 1990-1994 and 1997 to present representing science disciplines, International Program Advisory Committee (IPAC) 1993 to present (Committee Chair since 1997), Off-Campus Program Advisory Committee 1993 to present, Sciencefest Committee member since1996 (Chair 1999), College of Sciences Alumni Homecoming Committee member since1993, Comprehenssive Technology Planning Committee, and Marketing Eastern Illinois University

Dr. Baharlou's honors include Recipient of the 1998 Paul Overton Award for contributions and Support of Con't. Ed. Programs, Recipient of the College of Sciences 1999 Ringenberg Award for Scholarly Accomplishments, Eastern Illinois University 2000 Professor Laureate, 2003 Illinois Faculty Member of the year among Illinois twelve public universities chosen by the Illinois Board of Higher Education Student Advisory Committee, Member of Sigma Xi Scientific Society, and Member of National Omicron Delta Kappa Honor Leadership Society.
