1878:
August and Clara Sandburg, after coming across the sea,
Had a son names Carl, what a writer he would be.
1891:
After eighth grade, Carl dropped right out of school.
He had to work hard jobs, which wasn't very cool.
1893:
Carl and his friends decided to go out for a swim.
Since they weren't wearing any clothes, the police took them in.
1896:
When Carl was 18, he visited Chicago and fell in love,
This was the city he would write his most famous poems of.
1897:
Carl wanted to see the country and hopped on a train,
Spending a year as a hobo, he took any job he could gain.
1898:
He joined the Spanish American War, and upon his return,
Carl went to Lombard College, for writing he wanted to learn.
1906:
This is the year Sandburg made his first poetry book.
It was made in Galesburg. Not many took a look.
1908:
Sandburg met Lilian Steichan and she became his wife.
Together they made a family and stayed together all his life.
1916:
Chicago Poems was published and Sandburg became well known.
His poems reflected the American life. His popularity had grown.
1919:
Sandburg covered the Chicago Race Riots as a journalist for the Chicago
Daily News
He stood up for the "American Worker," and shared his labor issue views.
1940:
Writing his second book on Abe Lincoln took four long years,
but he won the Pulitzer Prize and many readers' cheers.
1945:
Flat Rock North Carolina is where he moved in his old age
And still continued to write poetry page after page.
1951:
For his Complete Poems, Sandburg won Pulitzer Prize number two.
He wrote of the "American Spirit," which lives in me and you.
1967:
On July 22, Carl Sandburg passed away.
A true American Hero, he's remembered to this day.
