Lesson 4 - Carving of the Monument
Lesson 4 - Carving of the Monument
Goals: Children will get a better understanding of the method in which Mount Rushmore was carved.
Overview: Teach about the actual carving process through discussion, videos and handouts. Focus on key methods of carving (honeycombing, bumping) and specific jobs that workers had (callboy, powder monkey). Discuss the conditions and certain procedures that the craving process included. Allow students to actually practice the honeycombing process by simulating the process with blocks of clay. Spell out Mount Rushmore in the clay (using crayons to show honeycombing holes) and save the blocks to display later.
