Lesson 3 - Lakota Sioux Native Americans
Lesson 3 - Lakota Sioux Native Americans
Goals: Through this lesson, the students will understand the hardships that the Lakota Sioux Native Americans have endured. Students will also learn about how sacred the Black Hills are to the Lakota Sioux and how they feel about the carving of Mt. Rushmore. Students will also learn about the Crazy Horse Monument and its importance to the Lakota Sioux people.
Overview: Start off by having students think about their favorite thing/possession and how they would feel if that thing was unfairly taken from them. Tell students to keep these feelings in mind throughout the lesson. Teach students about the Lakota Sioux people and the struggle they have had through fighting to keep their land and to keep their traditions and customs alive. Allow students to take notes during the lesson so they can remember what they learned. Next, teach students about the Crazy Horse Monument and its importance to the Lakota Sioux people. Have students write a paragraph as if they were a 3rd grade Lakota Sioux tribe member. They should think about how they would feel and why they prefer the Crazy Horse Monument over the Mount Rushmore monument.
