Some Grizzly
Bear Facts

A Grizzly Bears scientific name is Ursus Arctos

Habitat: The grizzlies live in large forests with meadows, grasslands, plentiful cover, varying elevation, and large river valleys.

Grizzly bears eat over 100 types of plants, insects, fish, rodents, berries, roots, bulbs, and large animals.

Grizzlies have a large hump of muscle and fat over the shoulder that gives them strength and power.  They have long claws that are 3-6 inches and that is used for digging and breaking up logs in search of food.  They come in many colors such as brown, cinnamon, blonde, and black.  Most of them come in a dark brown color.  They have 42 teeth.

Grizzly bears can live up to thirty years.

Bears are very curious and love to play.  They also give birth during their hibernation.  Adults bears cannot climb trees. Grizzly bears are an endangered species.

When Lewis and Clark met the grizzly bear they were very surprised by the animal.  An example of this is when Lewis and Clark's expedition met the grizzly bears for the first time they were shocked to find that the 600 pound animal that had been shot several times with muzzle loading weapons would still stand and charge, sending riflemen running for their lives.  Lewis and Clark's arrival led to the lessening of the bears population and its range.
