For our team skit, Mr. Johnson pretended that
he was Jacques Cousteau. He told the third graders all about Cousteau's
life and his love for the ocean. The classes even go to go on an undersea
dive! We all swam through the ocean and saw all of the wonderful
creatures there. The team leaders hoped the skit would make many children
want to join Team Cousteau! |
|
For our first lesson, we
learned all about la vie de Cousteau - the life of Captain Cousteau.
We looked at a timeline of all of the events in Cousteau's life.
Did you know he would have been in third grade in the year 1918? |
|
|
For our second
lesson, we learned more about Jacques Cousteau's invention of the aqualung.
First we read all about scuba, snorkeling, and snuba. Then, we got
to go on our own undersea dive! We learned how much easier it was
to research undersea life after the invention of the aqualung. Afterwards,
the 3rd graders got to keep their mini-aqualungs to take home. |
|
For our third
lesson, we learned all about the home of Jacques Cousteau: France!
We learned how to speak some French, including how to introduce ourselves
and how to say the colors of the rainbow. We split up into groups
and switched between two activities. One group got to go to a website
made by Miss Cassata. The 3rd graders read all about France and got
to look at some neat pictures. By following the links at the bottom,
we learned some more French vocabulary about sea life, and got to go on
a virtual field trip to the Eiffel Tower! You
can visit the site too! The other group read a story in French
called La Maison que Jacques a batie (also known as The House
That Jack Built!) We then got to look at other French books and
look up words in a French picture dictionary. |
|
|
For our fourth lesson, we learned about
the Earth's oceans. We named the oceans, located them on a map, and
found out how big they are. Did you know that 70% of the Earth is
covered by oceans? We also learned about the coral reef. We
watched a DVD documentary all about the coral reef. The documentary
was made by Jean-Michel Cousteau - that's Jacques Cousteau's son!
Jacques Cousteau taught his son how important it is to take care of our
oceans. |
|
|
In our fifth lesson, the third graders
teamed up to write their own book all about Captain Cousteau. Each
student wrote and illustrated one page about different things having to
do with Cousteau - his life and travels, France, the aqualung, the Calypso,
his
movies and TV shows, and fun facts about the ocean and Cousteau himself. |
|
|
For our final lesson, we studied all
about different ocean creatures. There are so many different plants
and animals that make the ocean their home. In fact, 9 out of 10
organisms that live on Earth live in the ocean. It's no wonder Captain
Cousteau loved the ocean - there's always something new and amazing to
learn about it! |
