Meet the Teachers

Sara, Christie, and Samantha are all senior pre-service teachers at Eastern Illinois University. Each of the teachers was able to meet with the students and teach individual lessons about Jane Goodall and the chimpanzees. Each of the teachers really enjoyed the opportunity to be able to teach the third graders about very important women in the history of scientific research. This experience has helped each of the teachers to learn several things not only about Jane Goodall, but also about each of the students in the group. It is the hope of each of the teachers that the students were able to learn and appreciate all that Jane Goodall was able to do for the chimpanzees. Some of the lesson topics for this unit included:
- Lets Meet Jane Goodall - Here the students were introduced to Jane Goodall. The students learned where she was born and what she was interested in as a child. The students were able to explore Jane Goodall and her past through several pictures and books!
- Timeline - During this lesson the students were able to map out exactly what Jane Goodall was able to accomplish during her life. The students also received an information packet that allowed them to learn much more about Jane and her accomplishments.
- Chimpanzees - This lesson allowed the students to understand what a chimpanzee was and how Jane was able to study and research this animal. During this lesson the children were able to learn through a song that provided the students with an opportunity to learn sign language, just like the chimpanzees!
- Help Save the Chimpanzees / Jane Goodall Institute- After learning about Jane and the Chimpanzees the students learned just how important it was to save this wonderful animal. The students learned about endangered species, and also participated in a flat Stanley project. The students also learned about ways to adopt their own class chimpanzee!
