The son of a merchant sailing
master, William Lloyd Garrison was born in Newburyport, Massachusetts,
in 1805.
William's father deserted
the family, forcing them to scrounge for food from more prosperous
families and forcing William to find work.
After suffering through various
jobs, Garrison began work for the Newburyport Herald as a writer
and editor.
Garrison started his own
newspaper and called it the Liberator. This paper's purpose
was to educate people, many of whom had never seen a slave or
heard about the cruelty of slavery.
Garrison helped establish
the American Anti-Slavery Society.
Garrison and his supporters
called for the creation of a new government that banned slavery
from the very beginning.
