The Mandan-Hidatsa came up the Missouri River and settled in parts of North and South Dakota. The terrain was very flat and their villages were located in the interior plain, far from any mountains. The winters grew extremely cold, and were full of freezing rain and snow. Lewis and Clark braved a winter with the Mandan-Hidatsa and experienced the harsh temperatures and horrid conditions.
