Stickeen is a story our WOW group read and thoroughly enjoyed.
The story of Stickeen is a true one, a story that Muir told many times. It is about an adventure that Muir had on an Alaskan glacier with a dog named Stickeen. Stickeen was not Muir's dog, but belonged to a friend. Until this point, Stickeen and Muir were not "friends," but after their adventure, Stickeen and Muir became inseparable, until the day Stickeen's owner left with him. Muir loved this story so much because it showed him that man and dog were not that much different. Muir wrote, "I have known many dogs, and many a story I could tell of their wisdom and devotion; but to none do I owe so much as to Stickeen. At first the least promising and least known of my dog-friends, he suddenly became the best known of them all. Our storm-battle for life brought him to the light, and through him as through a window I have ever since been looking with deeper sympathy into all my fellow mortals."
