Cesar Chavez Contributions


   1944  Cesar Chavez serves in the Pacific during World War II.

  1962  Cesar founded the National Farm Workers Association later to become the
               United Farm Workers (UFW).

  Cesar organized farm workers to register to vote and futher their educations.

  1965  Led a five year strike against California grape growers in demand for higher 
               wages.

  Createdfirst union contracts requiring rest periods, clean drinking water, hand 
      washing stations and protective clothing against pesticide exposure for farm workers.

  Achieved the first health benefits for farm workers and families.

  1991  Chavez is awarded the Aztec Eagle, Mexico's highest award presented to people
               of Mexican heritage.

  1994  President Clinton presents the Medal of Freedom, American's highest civilian
               honor, to Cesar Chavez after his death in 1993.
