Nez-Perce Indians

Who are the Nez-Perce?

The Nez-Perce Indians got their name because of their pierced noses.  They lived in the high mountains of what  now is considered Idaho and Organ and Washington.  They did not grow their own crops.  They hunted Deer, Elk, Moose, and Bear, that lived on the mountain with them. The Nez Perce lived by rivers that were full of salmon and other fish.  In the 1700's the trademark of the tribe known as the Appaloosa horse was introduced.

Lewis and Clark met the Nez Perce while crossing the Bitterroot mountains.  They arrived at their camp on September twenty-second.  The Corps of Discovery, first met with the chief, Twisted Hair.  He guided the group to there river camp.  Lewis, Clark, and their men, tried to recover from their illnesses with they had acquired on their long journey.  The Nez Perce where very friendly to the men.  They fed them roots and berries. They also gave the explorers directions on how to conquer the Bitterroot mountains.  To show their appreciation, Lewis and Clark gave the Indians a Peace and Friendship metal.
