After Oracle 9i enterprise edition - for Windows XP installed, and computer restarted, my
computer was running a little slow. I realized that Oracle takes alot of disck space.
I decided to run Disk Clean Up and Disk Defragmenter, then after restarting, my
computer got back to normal again.

If anyone happens to experience the same thing, actions mentioned above may do the
trick. Please note if you have never run Disk Deframenter before, it
may take a long time for it to finish.

I think it is a good practice to keep the computer disk space free from unnecessary files
or programs, especially when the disk capacity is low.

Please try these various usernames and passwords, one of them may work (unless you
changed any defaults during installation).

username/password
SCOTT/TIGER
SYSTEM/MANAGER
SYS/CHANGE_ON_INSTALL
DEMO/DEMO
PO8/PO8

If you put different name other than oracle for your SID, then you will need to use that
for the Host String.

I experienced the similar problem in the past, just to realized that the operating system I
had (windows ME) was not compatible with Oracle. I upgraded mine to Windows XP, then
I could install and run Oracle just fine.

To find your SID please try this from your computer Windows:

Start
Program file
Oracle
Configuration and Migration Tools
Net Manager

From Net manager
Expand / click on Oracle Net COnfiguration
Expand / click on Local
Expand / click on Service Naming
Click on Oracle

From there
Look what's on the Service Name
My SID is
oracle.animatedlearning.com (I copied Dr.Liu method)

Oracle is the SID, what we need for host string.

If yours is different, then try use it for the host string.

I beleive the 8i install is only one file. The three files that everyone is talking about is 9i.

Also, as far as unzipping. There is a great software tool called WinZip. It is availble free
at:
http://www.winzip.com.

Just download the demo or evaluation version. If you have Windows XP, an unzip utility
is a part of the Operating System. But, if you have 98 or 2000, you can get Winzip and
extract the files.

Am I understanding your problem correctly - when you installed oracle, you entered
different passwords for SYS and SYSTEM and now can't get it to work because it wants
you to use "manager" for SYSTEM password? If this is correct, I may have a solution
because I ran into the same thing last night.

There is a file called "orapwd" that I beleive is in the ora92/bin folder (you can do a
search on your machine to find it if needed). Running this will reset your passwords to
the defaults. After that, you should be able to use the SYSTEM - Manager name/pass
combination.

Wish I could take credit for this, but found the answer out on the web at
http://dbforums.com/arch/46/2003/5/780983 while I was trying to resolve the issue
myself.

In previous discussion many of us simply skipped the host string textbox and hit OK
button, and it worked well.
To see your default host string go to

Start
Oracle-OraHome92
Configuration and Migration Tools
Net manager
Oracle Net configuration (double clicked to expand the tree list)
Local (expand the tree list)
Service Naming (expand the tree list)
Oracle
on the right side for Service Name: (oracle.animatedlearning.com this
is what I used, and the word oracle is my host string). That first word
is your default name for host string
