Hello Santhi, Many softwares sets it up to start up as soon as windows starts: For example: msmgs.exe (MSN messanger), realsched.exe (real player's automatic updates), etc. These causes slowing down of windows at start up. So, you can stop these programs to automatically start when windows start, and set it up to start Manually when needed. To do this:

1. Click Start button and click "Run"

2. Type in "msconfig"

3. Click the "Start Up" index

4. You will see many programs with "check marks" and you can also see the description of those files..

5. If those files are related to the programs you know like "MSN messenger", "Real" then you can just Uncheck those..If you are not sure what those programs do then look it up on this site: http://www.processlibrary.com/directory/files/a This website has "a-z" index of all the possible programs that run at start up and provides description too...if the decription says that program is needed for windows then leave it "checked mark" and if it does not then "remove check marks".

6. After you get done with all the programs then click "Apply".

7. You will get a message about "restart" just click yes and restart your message.

8. when windows restarts you will get a system message saying "You have changed System Configuration....Blah! Blah!" Just Click "Don not show this message again" and hit ok.

9. At this time you will not feel a difference as that system message takes some time to load. However, if you restart again then you will see windows loading faster. Also as Uros said, Defragmenting your hard drive will also boost up the performance.

You can do it by: Start Menu>Accessories>System Tools>Defragmenter Hope this helps. Anuj

Oracle 10g take a LARGE amount of memory, I believe in the 512mb range. If your machine is low on memory, that could be the problem. I have a gig of memory and I noticed a minor slowdown. I use my laptop for both class and for work. I need good response at work. To solve this, I went in to Computer Management services tab and changed all the oracle services from auto to manual. I then created two command files, one to start the services and the other to stop the services. This way Oracle is not running unless I specifically need it. If you need a copy of the command files, please let me know and I could attach them; but you may need to change slightly to match the name of the instance you installed. -Steve Nelligan

Go into Computer Management, Services. Locate the Services whose name starts with Oracle. Change the "Startup Type" on those Oracle services from "Automatic" to "Manual". Note the names of the services which you changed. These are the services I changed: OracleDBConsoleoracle OracleOraDb10g_home1iSQL*Plus OracleOraDb10g_home1TNSListener OracleServiceORACLE NOTE: the services you have could be named something different. I believe that the 1st and 4th service has the name of the instance as part of the service name. If you did not name the Oracle instance "oracle" you may need to change the two command files to match the names of the services you have. After doing the above, restart your computer and go into computer management and confirm that none of the oracle services are running. If some are running, go back and change to manual and re-start again. If none of the services are running, exit computer management startup a command prompt and run the startOracle.cmd file. You should see the services starting. NOTE: It takes quite a while for some of them to start. If you did not get any errors, go back into computer management and ensure that the 4 Oracle services are running....

If all is well, run stopOracle.cmd to ensure that it is working and check computer management to ensure that all the oracle services are stopped. good luck, -Steve

The following lists the two (2) command files Steve posted:

Start Oracle Services

Stop Oracle Services
