Note from the Instructor: Below is a message posted by Doug Lawhead
in Spring 2002. I did not do any editing since I think it is beneficial
for our students to see the process of approaching certain problems.
It is a great opportunity for us to learn from each other. Great
Job!!!

As requested by Dr. Liu, I am reposting this under
theweek 3 Problems/Solutions discussin board. Thiscontains a URL
that may save you some trouble if youencounter a similar issue installing
Oracle. If any ofyou encounter a problem like what I describe below, perhaps
the Java Runtime that you need is available atthe following URL.
You will have to cut and paste itinto a browser because it apears
that the WebCT is notkeeping all of the URL in the link. It drops
the lastportion of it (e-windows.html) from the hot link. http://java.sun.com/products/jdk/1.1/jre/download-jre-windows.html
This is the only version of JRE (JRE 1.1.8_008)that
I could get the disk in the textbook to work with on a Windows 2000
machine. This version has reached its EndOf Life and is only available
in the archives atjavasoft.com. Here is what happened to me.
I am a Mac User who also has a PC at home but it came
loaded with Windows ME. Due to this I was facing a major issue when
it came to installing the Oracle software since it is Windows only
and not certified on ME. I investigated using Virtual PC to emulate
the Windows environment on my Mac G4 but the cost of upgrading Virtual
PC was prohibitive. After a little digging I was able to borrow
a laptop running Windows 2000 and I thought my troubles were over.
The laptop had been formatted by the previous user and had only
the operating system installed. When I first inserted the CD from
our textbook and attempt to install software I got an error message
that said,
"The Java RunTime Environment was not found at
../stage/Components/oracle/swd/jre/1.1.7/1/Data Files/Expanded\win32\bin\jrew.exe.
Hence, the Oracle Universal Installer cannot run. Please visit http://www.javasoft.com
and install JRE version 1.1.7 or higher and try again."
I went to the Website and located JRE version 1.1.8,
downloaded and installed it and restarted the laptop but the message
persisted. I returned to the Website and downloaded JRE 1.3.1_02
and it did not work either. I got the same message. I returned to
the site again and went to the software archives, downloaded and
installed version 1.1.8_007. This time the Oracle installer appeared
to be working after well over five minutes of the computer only
spinning the CD before I got the first installation screen. I went
through the first few screens of the installation process, selected
the software we are to install and then it stopped the installation
process and gave me this message:
"Autorun Resource Files not found: Please verify
the presence of all required bitmap files, wave files, and the configuration
file Autorun.ini in the directory path D:\autorun".
Being a Mac user this was as clear as mud to me but
I knew the D drive is the CD so I began suspecting an issue with
the hardware, especially after the CD had spun so long before the
installation screens began appearing. I then rebooted because the
touch pad appeared to freeze. I tried installing Oracle again and
got the original message about Java RunTime Environment not found.
At this point, I performed a search for JRE files and deleted all
I located in the computer. I then returned to the Java site and
installed 1.1.8_008 and rebooted. I got the Java RunTime Environment
not found message again. Without rebooting I tried again and this
time, it installed. Does anyone have any ideas about what was going
on
