TEC 5323 Advanced Database Technology

Tips for Week 1

(Warning: Candy May Be Bad for Your Teeth.)

  1. This is a summer course.  Be prepared to work hard.

  2. Look at the course Schedule to understand the tasks and assignment of the week.

  3. If you have any questions regarding the course, email me using the email within D2L.

  4. If you have any difficulty connecting to Internet, contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP).

  5. If you have any technical difficulty or problems related to this course, post it on D2L Discussion Board. Week 1: Problem and Solutions. You will receive help from the entire class. If you have not received your D2L account yet, you will have to contact the instructor as soon as possible, using email: pliu@eiu.edu or phone (217)581-7426.

  6. You are required to participate in the "Problems and Solutions" discussion every week even if you do not have any problems.

  7. Of course, you are required to contribute to the Weekly Discussion every week.

  8. Look at the course web site. I will constantly update the notes and resources sections based upon the needs of students.

  9. Deadline policy will be reinforced starting from this week.

  10. You need to do research on Oracle Technology Network, in order to decide which version of Oracle you want to install. This decision is mainly dependent upon the hardware of your computer. The instructor will work with you with any version as long as you are willing to buy him a lunch.

  11. Life Experience: During installation, please take note on everything you enter into the computer screens. Particularly, you need write down all the parameters including passwords. In case you are getting old as fast as the instructor, you will not be able to remember all details of your input. If disaster strikes and you have problems with the database, it will take you whole lot less time to resolve any problems. This seems to be very trivial. But, it is super important for professionals working in the field.

  12. Have you had lemonade lately?
