· The expedition group took crayons and 288 brass thimbles on the trip.
· The expedition group took 288 knives with them.
· Lewis took red paint, and blue and red ribbons.
· When they bought bags of flour, it cost .04 cents a bag.
· Lewis and Clark had wanted to leave in July of 1803, but didn’t end up leaving until the end of August. But the official beginning of the trip was May 21st, 1804 when they left from St. Louis.
· Throughout the entire trip, only one man died. Sergeant Charles Floyd died from an infected appendicitis.
· On August 8th, 1804 the expedition group encountered a very curious sight. The river was full of pelican feathers! The feathers covered the surface of the water 70 yards wide and 3 miles long.
· Sacagawea had a baby boy on February 11th, 1805. One of the men made a rattle for the baby out of a tail from a rattlesnake.
· A grizzly bear chased William Bratton all the way back to camp when he was out hunting one day.
· Lewis had a close encounter with a rattlesnake. On June 15th, 1805 Lewis woke up from a nap and a rattlesnake was only 10 feet away! He quickly killed it.
· Sacagawea met up with her long lost brother- who had become the chief of the Shoshone tribe!
· On November 7th 1805 Lewis and Clark were the first Americans to cross the continent by land and see the Pacific Ocean.
· Even though Lewis felt very guilty about it, he had his men steal a canoe from the Clatsop Indians because they didn’t have enough boats to get back across the continent and they didn't have enough trade goods to buy the boat.
· Lewis bought a panther skin eight feet long.
· On March 23rd 1806 the expedition group started their trip back east.
· On April 11th, 1806 three Indians stole Lewis’s dog, Seaman. Lewis became very angry and sent men after the Indians to get the dog back.
