Languages

We learned that Lewis and Clark depended greatly on their translators to be able to communicate with all of the Native American tribes. French was an important language to know since many French explorers and trappers had already been in contact with the Native American tribes. But alas, Lewis and Clark only spoke English. Many of Lewis and Clark's translators spoke several languages, but often were not fluent in all of the languages they claimed to be able to speak. This often caused communication problems, especially when the translators had to work together to translate from several people and several languages- like a game of telephone.
