You will need to visit Oracle Technology Network to download and install the software edition (personal, standard or enterprise edition) that is appropriate based upon your hard ware and operating system. All three editions will work for the purpose of this course even though there might be slight difference in some parameters. Please also note the description may not exactly reflect what is going to happen due to constant software update.

For students starting Spring 2004, please note the CD that came with your book does not contain the Oracle 9i database. Please do not use it. Instead, download your database software from Oracle Technology Network.

 

1. Install Oracle 8i Enterprise Edition (EE): If you have Windows NT/2000 and you have a minimum of 128 MB of RAM, you may download the software from Oracle Technology Network (OTN).

2. Install Oracle 8i Personal Edition: If you have Windows 98 and you have 128 MB RAM, you may install Oracle 8i Personal Edition. Oracle8i Personal Edition is the full-featured version of Oracle8i, targeted at individuals who require full compatibility with the entire Oracle8i database family. The main features of personal edition are very similar to EE, both of which will be satisfactory for the purpose of this course. By its definition, personal edition does not have the multithreaded network functions. You may have to download Oracle 8i Personal Edition from Oracle Technology Network

3. Oracle9i. I am providing you with my notes of installing Oracle9i on a separate Microsoft Word file. This file recorded what I did to download and install Oracle9i on my desktop PC. It is not a beautiful file, but I hope, it will give you some insights on what might happen when you install your software. Click here when you want to download my records.

5. Oracle 11g: Starting Summer 2008, if you like to install Oracle 11g, that will be fine.  Please check the Installation Guide by Oracle to make sure your hardware and operating system meet the requirements of Oracle 11g.
